Dricus Du Plessis celebrates his win over Israel Adesanya |
South African fighter Dricus du Plessis endured four rounds of punishing body shots before securing a submission victory over Israel Adesanya to retain his middleweight title at UFC 305 on Sunday.

Du Plessis (22-2) started strong with early takedowns, but Adesanya's relentless body strikes seemed to wear him down as the fight went on. However, in the fourth round, du Plessis connected with a powerful left hook followed by three right hands, bringing Adesanya to the ground. Seizing the opportunity, du Plessis locked in a chokehold, forcing Adesanya, the Nigerian-born New Zealander, to tap out.
"This man is the king of getting back up," du Plessis said of Adesanya, who was aiming to reclaim the middleweight championship for a third time. "I’m still alive, and that’s a bonus. I came here to die for this belt and to take a life. I’m still champion, baby."

The victory at a sold-out RAC Arena in Perth, Australia, marks du Plessis' third successful title defense in the highly competitive middleweight division and his second this year, following a split decision win over Sean Strickland at UFC 297 in January.
Adesanya, 35, was making his return to the octagon after losing the middleweight title to Strickland in a unanimous decision last September in Sydney. Despite Sunday’s defeat, Adesanya remained optimistic about his future in the sport. "This is the best I’ve ever felt. I’m 35, I’m doing the right things. I’m not leaving," he said.

Earlier in the event, local favorite Steve Erceg suffered a first-round technical knockout defeat in his flyweight match against New Zealand’s Kai Kara-France. It was Erceg’s first fight since being unanimously outpointed by champion Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 301 in Brazil in May.
