In 2003, during a performance with Jack Russell’s Great White, a tragic pyrotechnics mishap sparked a fire that claimed the lives of 100 people, including the band’s guitarist. The incident remains one of the deadliest nightclub fires in U.S. history.
The cause of Jack Russell’s death was attributed to Lewy body dementia and multiple system atrophy, as confirmed by K.L. Doty, the author of his autobiography. No further details were provided.

His passing was announced on his official Instagram account and later confirmed by Doty. Great White also paid their respects with a tribute post on their Instagram page.
Jack Russell co-founded Great White alongside guitarist Mark Kendall. The band, originally named Dante Fox, started by performing in small clubs across Southern California in the early 1980s. They rebranded as Great White in 1984 and achieved their first significant success with the 1987 hit “Rock Me,” which reached No. 60 on the Billboard Top 100 Chart.
The band's third album brought them even greater fame with the hit “Once Bitten Twice Shy,” which peaked at No. 5 in 1989 and earned them a Grammy nomination in 1990.

Russell briefly departed from Great White in 1996 to pursue a solo career but rejoined the band in 1999. By 2001, the group had disbanded. He and Kendall later formed Jack Russell’s Great White, which began touring in 2002. Tragically, during a show at the Station Nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island, in February 2003, the band's pyrotechnics triggered a fire that led to 100 fatalities and left 230 people injured.
Although Russell was not charged in connection with the fire, the club owners and the band’s tour manager were held accountable, and the band members agreed to a $1 million settlement.
Following the incident, the stress of lawsuits, internal conflicts, and Russell’s struggles with substance abuse led to the dissolution of Jack Russell’s Great White in 2005. The original Great White briefly reunited in 2007, but Russell eventually continued his music career with his version of the band. In July, he announced his retirement due to health concerns, expressing deep gratitude for his fans' support throughout the years.
