Macron rejects left bid to name PM before Olympics |
French President Emmanuel Macron announced that he will not appoint a new government until after the Paris Olympics. He dismissed a bid by a left-wing coalition to nominate Lucie Castets, a relatively unknown civil servant, as their candidate for prime minister. The New Popular Front, despite winning the most seats in the recent parliamentary elections, did not secure a majority.

"Making changes before mid-August would cause unnecessary disruption," Macron stated before the Olympic opening ceremony in Paris. Castets urged him to fulfill his responsibilities and appoint her.
Left-wing leaders accused Macron of undermining the legislative election results. Although Macron's centrist alliance faced significant losses, he has asked Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and his cabinet to continue in a caretaker capacity until successors are named. This was Macron’s first interview since the election setback.
Traditionally, the French president appoints a prime minister who can command a majority in the National Assembly. Currently, no party holds a majority, but the four-party NFP controls 182 of the 577 seats, positioning it to propose a candidate ahead of Macron’s Ensemble and the far-right National Rally.

In a surprise move, the left-wing coalition nominated Castets just before Macron's TV appearance, highlighting her commitment to public service. Castets, a 37-year-old economist and finance director for the City of Paris, lacks a background in party politics, which is atypical for French prime ministers.
Macron, in his interview with France 2, emphasized the need for a majority in the assembly rather than focusing on a specific candidate. He expressed uncertainty about which group would be able to appoint a prime minister and aimed to find a candidate with the broadest support possible.
Macron's stance drew sharp criticism from the NFP. Marine Tondelier of the Ecologists and Jean-Luc Mélenchon of France Unbowed accused him of denying the election outcome. Other alliance members, including the Communists and Socialists, demanded respect for the republic's tradition and urged the appointment of Castets.

In her radio debut, Castets defended her record in managing Paris's finances, asserting the differences between municipal and national debt. However, National Rally MP Sébastien Chenu mocked the nomination, suggesting her tenure in Paris disqualified her from national leadership.
