Elon Musk made an unexpected visit to Washington on Wednesday to attend Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress, joining the prime minister in his private box along with Netanyahu’s wife Sara, several Israeli soldiers, and a former Hamas hostage.

Musk’s appearance at the Capitol came just a day after he announced on X that his satellite internet service, Starlink, had been activated in a Gaza hospital, with support from Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
Netanyahu’s speech stirred controversy amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, leading to significant protests in Washington. The U.S. Capitol Police had to deploy pepper spray against protesters who were becoming violent near the Capitol.
During his speech, Netanyahu criticized the protesters, calling them “Iran’s useful idiots” and questioning their understanding of the conflict.
Over 30 members of Congress chose not to attend the address, with many citing disagreement with Netanyahu’s policies on the Israel-Hamas war. However, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a vocal critic of Netanyahu, attended the speech and displayed a sign reading “War Criminal,” highlighting the deep divisions within Congress regarding Netanyahu’s leadership.

Despite the notable absences, Netanyahu received a warm welcome from those present, including loud applause as he made his way to the podium. He expressed gratitude to President Joe Biden for his support, noting their long-standing friendship, and is scheduled to meet Biden at the White House on Thursday.
Vice President Kamala Harris did not attend the speech, citing travel commitments, and will meet Netanyahu separately. Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Ben Cardin, D-Md., presided over the session in Harris’s absence.
Several lawmakers, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, opted to boycott the speech, choosing instead to meet with hostage families or attend discussions on Middle East peace.

This address marked Netanyahu’s fourth appearance before Congress, with his previous visit occurring in March 2015. During his Capitol Hill visit, Netanyahu is also set to meet with top congressional leaders, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
