California is bracing for a major weather shift as monsoon moisture is expected to bring slow-moving thunderstorms to the Sierra Nevada on Tuesday and Wednesday. This has led the National Weather Service to issue a flood watch for the eastern Sierra, including Mammoth Lakes, Bridgeport, and Lee Vining, with the alert in effect through Wednesday evening.

The weather service warned that excessive runoff from these thunderstorms could lead to flooding in burn scars, creeks, streams, and other low-lying or flood-prone areas. Expect creeks and streams to potentially overflow, and low-water roads and crossings may become submerged.
Although South Lake Tahoe is not under a flood watch, there is a 25% chance of thunderstorms in the area on Tuesday.
Additionally, the Weather Prediction Center has issued a mesoscale precipitation discussion highlighting a heightened risk of flash flooding across parts of the Sierra Nevada, Mojave Desert, and Imperial Valley on Tuesday afternoon and evening. The discussion notes that rainfall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour with stronger storms, and some areas might see total rainfall of 2 to 4 inches, leading to scattered instances of flash flooding.
Thunderstorms are expected to develop over higher terrain and gradually move into the surrounding deserts.
