Governor Gavin Newsom has directed state agencies to begin clearing homeless encampments on public property, following a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision granting new authority.

In an executive order set to be issued Thursday morning, the governor mandates the removal of encampments that threaten "life, health, and safety."
This action could affect tens of thousands of individuals living in tent encampments across California. The latest data indicates approximately 180,000 people in the state are unsheltered on any given night.
Despite a $24 billion investment by the Newsom administration to reduce this number, it continues to rise.
State agencies are encouraged to collaborate with local governments to provide shelter and supportive services before dismantling encampments.

“This executive order directs state agencies to move urgently to address dangerous encampments while supporting and assisting the individuals living in them — and provides guidance for cities and counties to do the same,”
Newsom said in a statement. “The state has been hard at work to address this crisis on our streets. There are simply no more excuses. It’s time for everyone to do their part.”
The order also specifies that agencies should give at least 48 hours' notice before clearing an encampment and store any personal belongings collected during the process for at least 60 days.
