The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks as the alleged shooter who targeted President Donald Trump at a political rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, resulting in one fatality.
President Trump reported that a bullet grazed the upper part of his right ear. Two additional individuals were injured before Secret Service agents neutralized Crooks.
According to an anonymous source familiar with the investigation, the firearm used in the attack was purchased by Crooks' father six months prior. Additionally, an explosive device was discovered in Crooks' vehicle.
Where is Crooks from?
The FBI has traced Crooks' residence to Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, a working-to-middle-class community south of Pittsburgh. Attempts to contact family members at the listed residence were unsuccessful.
Neighbors described Bethel Park as a "quiet" area. Jim Zawojski, a 70-year-old retiree living nearby, remarked on the community’s reserved nature and noted that while people greet each other, they aren’t particularly close-knit. He mentioned a brief interaction with the Crooks family when he mistakenly received their mail but never engaged with them directly.
On Sunday, law enforcement restricted access to the street where Crooks is believed to have lived. Zawojski expressed sympathy for the Crooks family and wondered if there had been any signs of Crooks' mental state.
The Bethel Park School District confirmed that Crooks graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2022 and stated that they are cooperating with investigators.
Details begin to take shape
Crooks worked as a dietary aide at Bethel Park Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Marcie Grimm, the center’s administrator, expressed shock and sadness at the news, stating that Crooks had performed his job without any issues and had a clean background check. She emphasized that the center is cooperating with law enforcement and condemned the violence.
Robert S. Bootay, legal counsel for Clairton Sportsmen's Club, confirmed Crooks' membership in the club and condemned the attack. He also extended condolences to the family of Corey Comperatore, who died in the incident, and prayers for the injured.
Discord, a group-chatting app, confirmed that Crooks had an account on their platform but found no evidence that it was used to plan the attack, promote violence, or discuss political views.
In high school, Crooks received a $500 National Math & Science Initiative Star Award, according to a local news report. Allegheny County Councilor Dan Grzybek, who represents the district including Bethel Park, described Crooks as a typical, quiet, and relatively intelligent student.
A possible motive is unclear
Investigators are still trying to determine Crooks' motive. Records show that Crooks was a registered Republican but made a $15 donation through ActBlue, a Democratic-aligned organization, in 2021. Pennsylvania’s public court records indicate that Crooks had no criminal history.
