It was a perfect night for rock & roll on Thursday! The cloudy sky and a gentle breeze made it a great evening for concert-goers to enjoy some fantastic music. The year? 2024. Yet, with the Doobie Brothers in town, it felt like the 1970s again! Celebrating over five decades, their 2024 tour is a testament to their enduring appeal, getting everyone to “Listen to the Music” once more.
The distinctive sound of their early years, with hits like “Jesus is Just Alright with Me,” brought the entire crowd to their feet. Patrick Simmons’ amazing rendition of “Black Water” evoked memories of the FM underground and AM radio days. The sound mix, lighting, and big screen graphics were all on point. The band's tight performance and harmonious vocals were impressive, proving that the Doobies are still at the top of their game in 2024.
I must admit, I’m a fan of Michael McDonald and his keyboards. His smooth, powerful vocals filled the amphitheater, even reaching the lawn seats. McDonald’s unique sound brought a different vibe to the later Doobie catalog. But credit is due to the entire band for their relentless energy. Original members Patrick Simmons, Tom Johnston, and John McFee each had significant roles, taking turns on vocals and showcasing a three-guitar lineup that included banjo, mandolin, pedal steel guitar, and harmonica. Marc Russo's saxophone added another layer to the Doobies' sound. Ed Toth, on drums since 2005, and percussionist Mark Quinones, with his Allman Brothers connection, rounded out the rhythm section perfectly.
The Brothers delivered an hour and a half of non-stop hits, from the 70s to their latest record, “Liberte,” from 2021. Patrick Simmons performed a beautiful acoustic version of “Cannonball” from the new album. Tom Johnston opened the show with “Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While)” and led on “China Grove” and “Rockin’ Down the Highway.” Michael McDonald brought the soul with “Minute By Minute” and “What A Fool Believes,” inspiring dancing in the aisles. They closed the encore with “Takin’ It To The Streets” and “Listen to the Music,” wrapping up an exceptional evening of music.
The special guest in Tampa was The Robert Cray Band. Robert Cray is not just an opening act; he’s a respected guitar virtuoso. His four-man band was in perfect sync with him. I particularly enjoyed his performance of “I Don’t Care,” with its great guitar licks. On different stops of the tour, Steve Winwood and Robert Cray are alternating as special guests for the Doobies, adding to the excitement of each show.
