The confusion arose from a hoax news release posted on X, purporting to be from the "Office of Jimmy Carter." This fake announcement included explicit language referring to Carter's late wife, Rosalynn, and fabricated quotes attributing inappropriate comments to the former president.
Senator Lee, seemingly unaware of the hoax's content, tweeted from his personal account, @BasedMikeLee, "Former President Jimmy Carter has died. My thoughts and prayers are with his family." Realizing his error, Lee soon deleted the post. His office did not comment on the incident.
The false statement ended with a bogus quote from Carter's son, Chip, claiming the former president would be missed by both his family and enemies who supposedly benefited from his "peace-through-weakness agenda."
