On Friday, there were extensive interruptions in flights, banks, hospitals, and emergency services globally due to a significant technology collapse.
Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike discovered that unexpected outages experienced by thousands of Microsoft users were caused by a normal software update issue.
A flaw in a single content update for Windows hosts was discovered, and CrowdStrike is proactively assisting clients affected by it, the company said. Clients using Linux and Mac OS remained unaffected.
The mishandled update caused live news broadcasts to be disrupted, hospital appointments to be postponed, and passengers to become stuck at airports. It was made clear by CrowdStrike that the problem was a software error rather than a hack. Since then, they've located the issue and provided customers a fix.
But the harm had already done. All flights operated by American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Airlines were grounded. There were outages in 911 phone lines in states including Ohio and Alaska. While doctors in England were having difficulty accessing medical records, hospitals in Germany were canceling non-emergency operations. The news service of the London Stock Exchange was shut down. Live TV broadcasts were interrupted in France and Australia.
Numerous systems that were impacted showed the dreaded "blue screen of death," and some stranded travelers posted videos of the error screens on enormous airport banners.
"It's obvious that CrowdStrike has a serious problem here," WedBush analyst Dan Ives stated. Many in the tech industry were taken aback by the disruption's magnitude.
Tech executive Adam Robinson, headquartered in Louisville, said on X that "this IT outage is a stark reminder of how dependent we are on technology and many other things that happen behind the scenes that most of us are unaware of." "The many comforts we take for granted in modern society are fleeting."
This is a developing story that will be updated with more details as they become available.
