Headlines News Hub (HNH) — With just eight weeks before the U.S. election, Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, and his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris, have taken the debate stage. After their introduction, the two shook hands, ending the tradition of no handshakes during presidential debates over the last eight years. The debate kicked off with a discussion on the economy, a key issue for many voters. Harris spoke about her middle-class roots and outlined her plans to support families and small businesses if she is elected. She criticized Trump’s economic policies, accusing him of favoring tax cuts for billionaires and large corporations, while pointing out the economic downturn he left behind when Joe Biden assumed office. As the debate escalated, Trump shifted his focus to immigration, attacking Harris on the current administration's handling of the issue. Harris fired back, accusing Trump of using the same old tactics of "lies, grievances, and name-calling." She highlighted the challenges the Biden administration faced after taking office, including record-high unemployment, the COVID-19 pandemic, and threats to democracy. At one point, Trump launched a personal attack, calling Harris a Marxist, even mentioning her father's political beliefs. Harris remained composed, smiling throughout. Trump also defended his response to the COVID-19 pandemic, claiming that his administration did a "phenomenal job."
When the topic shifted to abortion, Harris warned that Trump would impose a national abortion ban if re-elected. Trump denied this, but struggled to give a clear answer when asked if he would veto such a law, claiming it wouldn’t pass Congress.
On immigration, Harris predicted Trump would focus heavily on the topic and poked fun at his rallies, claiming they often bore attendees, causing them to leave early. Trump responded by claiming that Harris had trouble drawing crowds and bizarrely referenced a conspiracy theory about immigrants eating pets in Ohio, which Harris laughed off.
Trump then criticized the Biden administration’s approach to crime, which Harris called hypocritical given Trump's legal troubles. Trump accused the Department of Justice of being weaponized against him, and even mentioned an alleged assassination attempt against him, saying, "I probably took a bullet to the head because of the things they (Democrats) have said."
Addressing foreign policy, specifically the Israel-Hamas conflict, Harris reiterated her support for a two-state solution, while Trump claimed the situation wouldn’t have escalated had he been president. Throughout the debate, Trump continuously criticized the Biden administration, attempting to link Harris to its perceived failures.
