The WandaVision spinoff recaptures the show’s magic but seems poised to repeat its biggest mistake.
Headlines News Hub (HNH) — The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for its shocking twists. But nothing was as surprising as Patti LuPone being accused of singing off-key in Agatha All Along.
A WandaVision spinoff, Agatha All Along, follows Agatha Harkness as she tries to regain her powers. The show isn't a musical, but it features a song by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. This song, "The Ballad of the Witches' Road," is heard throughout the series. It sets the witches on a journey to face their fears, including the fear of singing off-key. Created by Jac Schaeffer, Agatha All Along starts with a nod to WandaVision. Instead of a sitcom, Agatha is in a TV drama. She's a detective with oily hair who finds a dead body in the woods. The show is a Mare of Easttown knockoff, but it feels like it took too long to come up with the idea.
Agatha discovers the body is Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch. Wanda's death weakens Agatha's spell, allowing her to see her prison. She remembers the only way out: to gather a coven and walk the Witches' Road.
Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata) faces her fake wellness remedies. Alice Wu-Gulliver (Ali Ahn) confronts a generational curse. There are creepy witches and an angry ex-lover, Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza), who can't decide if she wants to kill Agatha or get her back.
A teenage boy, played by Joe Locke, joins Agatha's quest. He's called Teen, but his true identity is a mystery. The show often reminds us to care about who he is.
These scattered pieces of information aim to keep us interested in moving forward. They encourage us to keep watching or logging in each week. But, when it comes to witches, following these clues often leads to disappointment.
Anticipation can stretch out for weeks or months, keeping us hooked. But satisfaction is harder to achieve. A better show wouldn't make so much of the mystery. Even WandaVision lost its charm once the truth was revealed.
Agatha All Along is still fun, even if most of the joy is around the edges. Hahn's performance as the sorceress is acidic and cranky. The actors make every joke count, like LuPone's witch refusing to leave through an oven door.
But, I felt myself preparing for the less fun parts. When the story turns into homework, the excitement fades. The closing credits show images of witches from various stories, hinting at an old tale.
This tale is about powerful women fighting each other, distracting them from a common enemy. But the engaging distractions make us forget the journey's end. We'd rather just enjoy the ride.
