Philadelphia had been actively searching for a right-handed bat to boost their offense ahead of the Trade Deadline, and Hays fits their needs perfectly.
Hays, 29, was an American League All-Star in 2023 and has maintained a .260/.313/.435 slash line (109 OPS+) with 57 home runs across 483 games since the start of 2021. He boasts a career .791 OPS against left-handed pitchers, making him a valuable addition to the Phillies' lineup.
This move marks a significant upgrade at the plate for the Phillies compared to Pache, who, despite his exceptional defensive skills, has struggled offensively with a .179 average and a .515 OPS over 545 major league plate appearances.
For the Orioles, trading Hays opens up more opportunities for their younger talent, such as Heston Kjerstad, to get playing time.

In return, Baltimore gains a seasoned reliever in DomÃnguez, a 29-year-old right-hander with closing experience. DomÃnguez has a 3.55 ERA with a 10.3 K/9 rate over six seasons with the Phillies. While he has a 4.75 ERA this season, his powerful fastball and excellent slider have limited opponents to a .143 batting average in 2024.
