Yikes! Country Star's National Anthem Flop at Home Run Derby
Talk about striking out! Country singer Ingrid Andress had baseball fans cringing during her performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at this year's Home Run Derby. The event, held at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas on July 15, kicked off with a rendition that had viewers wishing for a seventh-inning stretch.
Andress, who's no rookie in the music world with four Grammy nods under her belt, seemed to be playing a different ballgame when it came to hitting the right notes. As her voice wobbled through the anthem, social media lit up like the scoreboard on a grand slam night.
One sports commentator on X (formerly Twitter) diplomatically called the performance "interesting, to say the least." Others weren't as gentle, with one fan declaring it "painful" and another claiming Andress "missed every single note." Ouch!
Even the players couldn't keep their game faces on. Cameras caught Philadelphia Phillies' Alec Bohm looking like he was trying not to crack up. It was giving serious Fergie-at-the-NBA-All-Star-Game vibes, if you know what we mean.
CBS Sports writer Mike Axisa tried to soften the blow, acknowledging Andress's talent while admitting her anthem was a swing and a miss. "We're all thinking it," he wrote, "and it has to be said."
ESPN initially shared a video of the performance on YouTube, but it seems they've called it foul and taken it down. Maybe they're hoping for a do-over?
Despite this curveball, Andress has had her share of home runs in the music industry. She made waves with her hit "More Hearts Than Mine" and has a couple of solid albums under her belt. Her duet with Sam Hunt, "Wishful Drinking," even scored a Grammy nod last year.
Interestingly, Andress has some major league connections – her dad used to be a strength coach for teams like the Tigers, Rockies, and Mets. Maybe next time she'll knock it out of the park instead of striking out. Hey, even the pros have off days, right?
