The first two cases of West Nile in the county were announced by the health district on June 26. Of the current cases, five are non-neuroinvasive, while nine are neuroinvasive.
The neuroinvasive form of the illness can lead to encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 1 in 5 people infected with West Nile virus develop a fever and other symptoms. Approximately 1 in 150 infected individuals develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness.
The map indicates that most West Nile virus activity is concentrated in the northwest Las Vegas area and North Las Vegas.
